Tips for Seniors on
Searching for a Sweetheart the Second Time Around?
DATELINE: ISSUED 9/23/02…
Love is not just for twentysomethings, nor is it impossible to find love a second, or even third time around. But dating has changed from the days of lemonade and the porch swing. Here are some tips to get back into the swing of things.
Forget the Dating “Rules”
“Dating the second time around after a being in a long-term relationship, can be one of the most challenging parts of life, for some it’s even more challenging than a career change. Because of the closeness and familiarity that is established in a long-term relationship, it’s sometimes difficult to remember to begin a new relationship at the beginning, simply getting to know each other and moving it along slowly. It can be done. There is just one rule to remember…unlike times past, there are no set dating rules,” says Paul Falzone, CEO of the world’s largest dating service, The Right One and Together with over 80 locations throughout the United States.
Getting back into circulation is never easy for those looking for love after years of a long term relationship. Once removed from the dating pool, it can be very difficult to get back into the swing of things.
For those about to take the plunge back into the “single” world and begin dating again, the following tips should help serve as a guide:
On Equal Footing
Nowadays, equality is one of the main components of dating. Unlike fifteen to twenty years ago, men are not “obligated” to pay for the entire bill or the entire date. Both people should be prepared to pay during the date. Who shall pay has become a joint decision, often times each paying their own way. And remember, either party may suggest the next date or telephone call.
Comfort Plays a Key Role
In lieu of the former “rules” of dating, comfort level is now the key ingredient that cues couples to the next step in a relationship, which could mean deciding to date someone exclusively or becoming sexually intimate. For folks rejoining the dating scene, that comfort level should guide how a relationship will progress and each should be upfront about expressing whether or not they are ready to move ahead.
“As many of us grow older, opportunities to meet new people become fewer and far between, but people need and look for companionship. Regardless of whether the friendship is platonic or romantic, it’s good to have someone in your corner whom you can trust and share both the good and not so good times. You need to be comfortable with a potential companion, so let your comfort level guide you,” notes Falzone.
No Games
There are no rules to dating, and there shouldn’t be any games either. People should not put on airs or pretend to be other than they are to try in an attempt to be liked or admired. Either the compatibility is there and two people like each other, or not. There no sense in wasting your own or someone else’s time. Be upfront. If you can’t share who you are, then how can you spend “quality” time with another person? Be yourself from the start.
Leave the Past in the Past
Whether you are a widow or widower or if you’ve gone through a difficult divorce, it is easy to slip into thinking about people and events of the past, and worse yet, comparing them to the present. But it must not be done. When you begin dating again, try to remember that every person is a unique individual and look upon each date as a new and fresh experience. Don’t compare your date to those you have dated or had relationships with in the past. Leave it in the past.
Enjoy the Moment
Don’t stress out about finding a relationship before a certain age or because you have reached a certain age. People need to learn from and enjoy each stage of life. As we grow older, it’s easy to get set in ways and routines, but you should allow yourself to make some room in your life for new experiences and people. When you do begin dating again, let nature set its course, relax and enjoy the moment. Learn how to recognize the signs of compatibility. Pay attention to your feelings. Is your heart beating faster? Do you find yourself at ease when you’re together?
With a successful history of many thousands of relationships and numerous marriages to its credit, The Right One and Together Dating have refined the art of matchmaking.
According to Falzone, “As relationship experts, we eliminate the ‘footwork’ for people. Instead of dating someone over a period of months or years and then finding out you’re simply not really compatible, we find out ahead of time for you. We take care of the interviews and gauge compatibility and suitability for our clients, essentially cutting down on the enormous amount of time that it usually takes to find that special someone, The Right One.”

By Anonymous Junkyard Todd is the former lead guitarist of Hollywood
Records/Surfdog Records recording act Alien Fashion Show, a swing
group that often toured with Brian Setzer Orchestra, Big Bad Voodoo
Daddy and Royal Crowne Review at the height of the swing craze during
1997-2000. While he enjoyed his time as a touring professional, his
influences of indie rock were not being nurtured. He left AFS in
December 1999 to pursue his solo works and relocated to Cleveland with
his wife and daughter.
In his home recording studio, he began work on Diary of a Mad Cow, a
mix of works that had been rattling around in his brain for quite some
time. The result was a pop/punk indie rock hybrid, which shows his
eclectic sense of humor.
His wife, Judyth, a music industry veteran for 20+ years became his
manager. They decided that the best way to reach his audience was to
start on the internet.
BIO:
Todd was born Todd Blakemore Thurman in Seattle Washington. After
playing bass in many local bands in high school, he relocated in 1987
to Los Angeles at the height of the Grunge Scene to pursue music and
follow his dream. He met Judyth, the woman who would become his wife
at a Buddhist meeting in 1988; they married in June of 1989. Red
Heaven, his band at that time-had a modest success playing author Anne
Rice's Halloween party every year for almost 5 years.
Red Heaven was a gothic rock band with an allure of haunting ballads
and mystic fire. Tired of playing to crowds of 20 in Los Angeles, the
band dissolved in 1996. Todd got together with Red Heaven brothers
Eldon and Jeff Daetweiler to perform as a lounge trio with Todd
switching over to guitar. Later, they formed Alien Fashion Show and
added Kenji Saito on keyboards and Jeff Allen on stand-up bass. There
was magic.
Through a mutual friend, they invited Brian Setzer to come down and
check them out at the Mint; an LA club catered to by the swing elite.
Setzer was impressed. He invited them to open for him at LA's The
Greek Theatre- a major gig. This also lead to opening for Setzer on a
small number of West Coast Dates. On New Year's eve 1997 in San
Francisco, Setzer's manager Dave Kaplan checked them out. Kaplan liked
what he heard and signed them to his label, Surfdog Records in 1998.
Soon afterward, they were whisked to the studio with producer Jim Wirt
(Fiona Apple-Tidal) to record their self-titled release.
A few months later, Surfdog partnered with Hollywood Records on the
AFS release. The band was reeling to find themselves under the
umbrella of powerhouse Universal Distribution. Here in the height of
the swing scene, they became a group that often toured with Brian
Setzer Orchestra, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy and Royal Crowne Review. AFS
found themselves performing at the Britannia Awards honoring John
Travolta, and Gray Davis-the New Governor of California invited them
to perform at his inaugural ball in the state's capital. They also
were on several compilations and soundtracks including the
popular "Next Generation Swing."
While Todd enjoyed his tenure with the band, the recording, gigs and
touring constantly took him away from his newborn baby girl Genna, and
wife Judyth. Like many musicians who know touring - the fun went out
of it. Reality hit home when Judyth's Dad (Jack) was diagnosed with
cancer in July of 1999, and they relocated to Cleveland to take care
of him. Todd sequestered himself in his own studio to work on his solo
album, Diary of a Mad Cow.
Jack ended his battle with cancer October 26th, 2000. Todd
dedicated "She says Hello," a gentle tribute to his father in law, who
lost his wife Helen in 1993 and never got over it. It is about grief,
loss, and ultimately, reunion. Many of the songs show Todd's humor,
opinions and love of life. From the Rocky Horror-esque gothic
romp "Let's Go To The Cemetery," to the twangy "The Legend of Junkyard
Todd," and the tear jerking "Light of Mercy"- Diary of a Mad Cow
shines in power punk/pop with indie rock influence.
Swing fans may be surprised at the difference in style from Todd's AFS
days. "I'd love it if the swing fans will dance to Diary of a Mad
Cow," laughs Todd, "And they may have to alter their steps a bit!"
Sadly, AFS broke up officially last year, and Todd even found a copy
of Next Generation Swing at Rite Aid!!!!
Todd resides in a western suburb of Cleveland Ohio with wife/manager
Judyth, their "darlings" 4 1/2 year old Genna, and 10 month old
Aurora. He adores harassing jocks on college radio, mountain biking,
Sonic Youth, Guided by Voices, Bob Mould, and winning arguments.
The album is available NOW on CD Baby (www.cdbaby.com).
